Are RV mattress sizes different?

Are RV mattress sizes different?

Yes, RV mattresses come in different sizes compared to what obtains in the conventional mattress.

This is one of the reasons why it may not be easy to install a traditional mattress in your RV.  The size of an RV is far smaller than the size of your bedroom.

The sleeping platform in an RV is designed to take into account the size of the RV and this is why the RV mattress is generally smaller than the traditional mattress.

Are RV mattress sizes different?

RV designs

RVs had been around for a very long time; people have been using them for more than 100 years now.

They are transportable homes that are designed compactly. They also include virtually all the essential sections you will find in a typical home, like the bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room.

The available space in a typical RV is not more than 400 feet and all these sections have to fit into that small space.  This is one of the major reasons why an RV can rarely accommodate the traditional mattress since space is limited.

Aside from being smaller than traditional mattresses, RV mattresses are also narrower and can fit tightly. Bear in mind that there is also no standard size for RV mattresses and this is because the sleeping platforms in RVs have different dimensions.

There are different sizes of RVs out there today and the sleeping platform in each type of RV differs in size depending on the total size of the RV.

This means that a relatively large RV will have a correspondently large sleeping platform. This also rings true for smaller RVs.

Since there is no one-size fit as far as RV mattresses are concerned, you should first measure the dimensions of the sleeping platform in the RCV before you go ahead to purchase an RV mattress. It will do you a world of good indeed.

This type of mattress is small and can work for virtually all categories of RVs. It can also be installed in your travel trailers and motor homes.

The dimensions of the RV twin mattress are 28 inches W by 75 inches long. They are also thinner by 7 inches than the regular twin-size bed.

On the other hand, the twin XL mattress is 28 inches wide by 80 inches long; this second option is narrower by 10 inches than the standard twin XL mattress.

If you are the only one to sleep on the RV mattress, the RV Twin mattress is undoubtedly a good choice for you. They can fit Murphy beds, pull-out beds, and bunk beds.

Truck mattress

Truck mattresses are specially designed to fit into semi-truck cabins. Be that as it may, they are popular in RVs.  The dimensions are roughly 35 to 42 inches wide and 79 to 80 inches long.

The two categories are taller and wider than an RV twin bed.  So, anyone looking for a taller RV mattress can always opt for this.

The mattress may be tall, but it is highly compact. So, it will still not take up too much space in the RV.

Bunk mattress

If you own a family-friendly mattress, the bunk mattress can fit in satisfactorily since such an RV will create adequate space for this type of mattress.  It is a good choice for your RV if several people will be occupying the RV.

There are different sizes of bunk mattresses. The dimensions can be 28 to 35 inches wide and 75 to 80 inches long.

It can fit different RV types too, provided there is a bunk bed in that RV.  When purchasing the RV mattress, find out first if the size and dimension fit the space available in your RV.

Three Quarter Mattress

This mattress got its name because it represents 75% of the width you get in a standard queen mattress.  The mattress is 48 inches wide by 60 inches wide by 75 inches long.

The mattress is 5 inches shorter than what you find in a standard RV. If the sleeping platform in your RV is shaped oddly or somewhat narrow, this RV mattress is one of the best to buy for that purpose. The mattress is wide enough to accommodate two younger children.

RV full mattress

You can also refer to this type of RV mattress as the RV double mattress. Its dimensions are 53 inches by 75 inches.

This type of mattress is an inch narrower than what you can get in a standard full-size mattress. As a result, it can fit into a narrow camper conveniently.

This mattress will perfectly fit a single sleeper. A tall person may not be able to use it. A couple will also find it somewhat cumbersome.

Short queen mattress

This is another name for a queen mattress that is way shorter than a standard queen mattress. Its dimensions are 60 inches wide by 75 inches long.

This makes it 5 inches shorter than the dimension of a standard queen-size mattress.

If you want to spare space in your RV, this is a very good choice of mattress to go for.  Even though it can help to save space, it is still adequately large to contain two adults or even up to three children.

RV Queen Mattress

More RV owners prefer the short queen-size mattress to the standard RV mattress.  Be that as it may, a good number of RV owners still use the standard type.

The dimensions are 60 inches wide by 80 inches long, which means they have the same dimension as the standard queen mattress.

Because of its size, two adults and three children can squeeze themselves on the mattress.

Short king mattress

This mattress is way shorter and narrower than the standard type of king-size mattress. You can also call it the Eastern Kings.

The dimensions of the mattress are 72 inches wide by 75 inches long. They are 5 inches shorter and 4 inches slimmer than what you can get in an Eastern king mattress.

The short king beds are wide. So, they may not be able to fit into a small RV. The size of your RV must be adequately large to accommodate them.

They are wide enough to accommodate three to four children or a couple.

RV king mattress

This mattress is not as wide as the standard king mattress. Its dimensions are 72 inches wide by 80 inches long.

They are very good choices for couples, especially if they are taller than 6 feet. The RV mattress is equally wide enough to accommodate up to four small children.

In this section of the write-up, we will focus on the various types of RV mattresses available for sale out there today.

Types of RV mattresses

RV mattresses are available in non-standard, odd sizes. They can be classified according to the materials used in making them. The various types of RV mattresses available are highlighted below:

  • Memory foam mattress
  • Latex mattress
  • Innerspring mattress
  • Hybrid mattress
  • Air mattress

Memory foam mattress

You can opt for a mattress coating memory foam if you have cause to use your RV mattress frequently.

The mattress can offer incomparable support to the sleeper and it can equally last for a very long time. It equally conforms perfectly to the body of the sleeper, therefore, able to relieve pressure points and assuage pains on different parts of the body.

Some memory foam can feel hot, however.  If you prefer memory foam that feels cool, then you should go for gel-infused memory foam or copper-infused memory foam.

The two of them can regulate body temperature and are also breathable.  There are different brands and sizes of this memory

Latex mattress

A latex mattress is an eco-friendly choice of an RV mattress.  The mattress is breathable and is derived from rubber trees, which makes it a naturally composed product.

There is a similarity between this type of mattress and the memory foam since the former also contours the body of the sleeper and, therefore, relieves pressure points.

While a latex mattress can contour the body of the sleeper, you will not have a sinking feeling when lying on it as it would have been the case in a memory foam mattress.

It also does not feel as hot as memory foam lacking gel or carbon infusion.

A latex mattress is hypoallergenic. This means it can resist molds, bugs, dust mites, and so on so, the mattress will remain useful irrespective of how many times you have to use the RV.

A latex mattress is, however, more expensive than a memory foam mattress.

 Innerspring mattress

This type of RV mattress is traditional and has several features like a coil support layer for a peaceful; night rest.

The mattress is equally breathable and can provide adequate support to the sleeper. You can get a lot of bouncing from this mattress also

The mattress comes with pillow-top comfort for the end-user. Be that as it may, pillow tops may not be the best at all times.

After using it for some time, this type of mattress tends to develop lumps and flatten out. When such happens, then it is time to replace the mattress with something else. This type of mattress is relatively cheap. You should not expect much comfort from it.

Hybrid mattress

This mattress is included with a pocketed coil support system that makes it a better choice than many other mattresses.

The top layer of the mattresses in the product contains memory foam or latex foam, which are usually 2 inches in thickness.

The hybrid mattress is a considerably durable product. It is highly supportive and bouncy too. It is an all-foam mattress and will give you great comfort each time you lay on it.

The coil in the mattress helps to promote airflow throughout the mattress even though its upper layer is made of foam.

The construction of the mattress is somewhat complex and this makes them relatively heavy. They can also be very expensive, but you will always get value for money when you purchase the mattress.

The right thickness of an RV mattress

Most of the RV mattresses sold out today have low profiles between 5 and 6 inches.  This makes them rather thin and also reduces their weight.

In such a situation, the RV mattress will not add much to the weight of the RV so that the Gross Total Weight Rating of 2800 pounds is not exceeded.

The lightweight of the RV mattress makes it very easy to transport them from one place to another.

However, you do not have to stick to a 6 inches RV mattress; you can always go for something thicker than this if you want more comfort out of the RV.

Installing a thicker mattress in your RV has its benefits in that it will offer more comfort when you sleep.

On the flip side, it may take up much of the space between the top of the mattress and the ceiling of the RV.

It may, therefore, become difficult to stand on the RV mattress or even sit upright on the mattress for the fear of your head hitting the ceiling.

The size of the bed platform in your RV can determine the type of RV you can install in it. Many of the standard mattresses out today are longer and wider than what obtains in an RV mattress. Even at that, you can still use a standard mattress in an RV provided there is adequate space in it.
